Filling Filter Cartridges

CleanIt supports 2 high-volume, full-length, media cartridges and 2 compact cartridges via its gravity assisted, electrically pumped, water circulation technology. CleanIt enables users to filter via (up to) 4 different types of filter medias per water cleaning cycle. With extra cartridges and media on hand, users can swap your media cartridges in less than 5 minutes and increase your filtration capabilities.

Follow Center for Disease Control (CDC) pre-filtration water treatment guidelines. Screen, boil, cool, test, and then disinfect water (using a tincture / weak iodine solution).

Then perform 4+“CleanIt filtration cycles.” CleanIt draws water in from 1 container, flows water through filtration cartridges, and pumps water out into another container. We consider this 1 cleaning cycle. By re-flowing cleaned water 3 additional times, through CleanIt cartridges, you increase the loaded filter medias’ likelihood of trapping contaminants. Water is cleaned (per cycle) at a rate of .80 Liters per minute, so, 4 cleaning cycles can deliver as much as 10 litters of cleaned water per hour.

This may sound like a lot of effort…but if you believe that the water you have access to can sicken you, your loved ones and friends…then this effort seems trivial.

After 4 cycles, always retest your water before using it for personal hygiene, consumption, or for gear decontamination.

Carry spare cartridges loaded with alternative filter media (effective for dissimilar contaminants) if you believe you may encounter a variety of dissimilar contaminants.

Below, step-by-step instructions are provided as video so you understand how to prepare CleanIt for your adventure or water emergency.

Below you learn about handling 4 key components: (1) filter media, (2) cartridge liners. (3) cartridge housings and (4) cartridge stoppers (which include barbed house stems).

  1. Filter Media:

Cleanit and its cartridge liners described below support media granule sizes expressed as standard “mesh” sizes. CleanIt supports 8x30 mesh size, or larger, granules (about .60 mm in diameter or larger). CleanIt supports resin beads as small as .3 mm. Common medias include, but are not limited to, various types of granular activated carbon (GAC) particles and resin beads.

Please Note: All filter media to be loaded into the cartridges must be either rinsed (if the media is new) or cleaned (if the media is used) prior to being loaded into cartridges. New (never used) media must always be rinsed regardless of the media type. You can see the video below which shows the minimal rinsing process. but we strongly recommend the following:

    (A) RInsing New Media: Disperse new dry media on the surface of 2 stacked, 100 mesh, screens placed on a clean bucket. Slowly pour clean, disinfected, water over the media. Lift the screens covered in media off of the bucket and properly dispose the water (saturated with media waste particles). Rinse the bucket thoroughly with clean water. Pour the rinsed media off the screens into the clean bucket and and slowly pour clean, disinfected, water into the bucket until 100% of the media is completely covered in water. Gently stir the beads or granules in the clean water solution for at least 15 minutes. Let the media sit in the clean water for 2 hours. Pour out and properly dispose of the the water. Disperse the rinsed media onto a clean pair of screens on a bucket to drip dry for about 30 minutes prior to loading the rinsed media into the CleanIt cartridge.

    (B) Clean used filter media via a simplified version of the Duchess County procedures.

  2. Cartridge Liners:

It is vital that your filter media is protected from large amounts of sludge, which will coat your media granules / beads, and is protected from large contaminate particles, which can block the pathways between your media granules / beads. When used properly, cartridge liners protect your media from sludge / large contaminate particles via their precision-cut, 100 mesh, woven copper, fabric (which behave like water permeable shields). Regularly used, properly handled, and well maintained cartridge liners (occasionally, delicately, “scrubbed” via a soft brush and a sodium bicarbonate / white vinegar paste, and then rinsed with clean water) will last for many months. You can order spare or replacement liners from us or cut your own liners from 100 mesh, woven copper fabric exclusively, via the provided drawing.

  3. Cartridge Housings

Housings are tough, thick-walled, non-permeable, food-grade, containers, which maintain the shape of the cartridge liners. You can find their dimension / volume information on the page describing our recommended filter media. We recommend that you use the provided cartridge socks, to further insulate your cartridge housings (and their contents) from scuffs, bangs, and bright direct, sunlight.

  4. Cartridge Stoppers:

CleanIt is designed to take a hit and keep on running. It is designed to operate, simply, in the harshest conditions. Cartridge stoppers (along with their barbed hose stems, their straps, and their ratchets) securely seal the cartridges so they don’t leak and so that contaminants outside of the secured filtered water pathways can’t penetrate the cartridges.

It is simple to load your filter media cartridges and attach them to your pump assembly.

Prep your pack for the upcoming journey or possible water emergency. Select your media based upon known or reliably-predicted water contaminates. Remember to always carry a variety of water test kits so you know your selected filtration media is removing both predicted and unpredicted toxins. CleanIt and spare cartridges are lightweight and designed to wear comfortably, so carry spare cartridges, loaded with the variety of media you will most likely need during your adventure or in case of a water emergency.
